did a quick 3 day stop at Mui Ne, Vietnam last December. My girlfriend was doing a rotation at a hospital in Da Nang, and I was going to be in Vietnam for two weeks anyway, so did a quick detour to Mui Ne before joining her. Mui Ne is in the south about 115 miles from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). My first time to Vietnam!
Quick details
-water is warm (no wetsuit)
-air is hot!
-beer is cheap! as low as $0.50
-food is good, especially if you're adventurous
-three windsurf centers in Mui Ne (two are Russian)
-Mui Ne is a cheap vacation destination for Russian tourists, so most of the signs are in both Russian and Vietnamese
I don't speak the language, and it was my first time in Vietnam, so I had my hotel arrange private transport from the airport to Mui Ne. I think it was about $115 and took about 4 hours (my return trip to the airport was via sleeper bus for ~$5 which took about 5 hours). The driver was very surprised I was the only passenger. I stayed at the Full Moon Beach Hotel which is right next to Jibe's, the original windsurf center in Mui Ne. The staff here all speak English, and the hotel is right on the "beach". There has been a ton of beach erosion over the years, so I use the term beach loosely. Two doors down is Jibes and both it and the hotel are owned by a French dude named Pascal. My hotel was $50/nt which is quite expensive compared to all the other windsurfers I met. Accommodations were modest and cleanish. Jibes has a pretty large fleet of gear of varying vintages. Tiesda You from Starboard was there testing 2020 gear, and I ran into him at a seafood restaurant my first night there. Conditions are side-on bump and jump w/ a decent amount of alongshore current. There really isn't any beach to land on downwind, and there is some shorepound. I didn't get prime conditions, but I had a fun 4.8/90 sesh and some other sessions on 7.5 and 5.5.
Probably not a place I'd travel to unless I was already in the area, however there is another spot a few hours north near Phan Rang called Vietnam Surf Camping that looks like it has really good conditions. Mui Ne itself has the feel and hustle of a tourist trap. I preferred my time in Da Nang (central) and Hanoi (north) and spots in between (Hang En Cave)
