TOPIC: My next wave board?

My next wave board? 6 months 3 weeks ago #1

I put this here instead of the gear forum because it's so wave-specific...

* Exocet has made a lot of "long" (windsurfing) waveboards over the years but many of them were on the heavy side and got mixed reviews.
* I have a 10' SUP that is awesome in waves with a sail in very light wind (or with a paddle). Catches the smallest and mushiest of waves, goes down the line with nice cutbacks, gets out through whitewater like it's motorized. Small fins so I can ride all the way into shore and jibe in the backwash. Absolute fun.
* I have several short (<8') wave boards that are awesome when the wind is solid planning. But when it's up and down they can be a lot of work to ride. And often the wind is light inside, right where the best waves (with actual lips and whitewater) are.

Thinking this might be the perfect "board in the middle"...

Way lighter than previous / similar Exocet boards. Not sure about the step-tail thing but people say they work.
Long waveboards catch waves way better than short waveboards (even the 125~135 liter ones) in light wind.
Maybe the planning ability provided by the step-tail is the answer...?

I can only speak from observation. Rich has a 2013 Exocet Curve 10' 1/2. It has the step tail. Much lighter and thinner rails than his Kona. There's schlogging and planing but in-between is glide. These types of boards have a whole bunch of glide. When he gets up on the step tail he's gone. I can barely keep up with him. And the turning point, pivot point, becomes the step tail. He can also out point everybody up wind and hold ground sub planing. Grabs both worlds nicely, I would say. Hit St. Joe when it goes side-off NE - should be like heaven on one of these.

You get a good look at the step-tail in this video. And what Patrice says about it.
