TOPIC: J17 Cove, 4.0 SSW, 5/16/25

J17 Cove, 4.0 SSW, 5/16/25 1 week 5 days ago #1

70+ mph wind. We hung out at the walk-in camping parking lot in the afternoon. Something told me don't get on the water until the storms pass. And it was not bad wind. The storms would pass around 4:00. This was a real gamble because the storms could kill the wind and it never...comes back. We got hit by a little rain from the very top of a line of storms extending south. The light rain passed, the temp drop, and it dropped the wind. I walk down to see if the wind was filling in now that the storms passed to the east, moving north east. It was slowly coming back. I noticed a little dust way up wind on the horizon. It didn't look like a big deal. The wind started to come back that I ran back and started to rig a 4.0. The gusts were bending the trees as they came through. And it's getting a little more dusty. And as I'm starting to tie off my downhaul I hear this roaring wind sound and there's not a break in it. It's just constant. And it's getting closer and closer. I said to myself that sounds like a freight train. I shot up and put sail next to the tree line even though we are buried in trees back here and took cover. I thought this thing is gonna suck my sail right out of here. The shy went dark with dust. It looked like there was rotation in it but I'm not sure. I looked again at the radar it showed the storm had passed. Did something form on the back edge, I thought. This was wind being sucked in behind the storms. The dust started to clear and I suited up. Campers began to follow us as we carried our gear down to the water to see this.. It was raging out there. We adjusted our sails as the wind eased off into sunset.

A farmer's meter on Weather Underground just west of the lake hit 75 mph and that was after the light rain storm passed.

It's hard to capture the dust. This was when it was starting to clear.
