TOPIC: Recommendation for a new board

Recommendation for a new board 5 years 11 months ago #13

How about this?
www.bigwinds.com/jp-18-ws-board-allride-106-fws
Is this in your price-range? Looks like a great deal for a lightly used board. Should do what you are looking for in a higher-wind board and it can be set outboard or center strap. You could ask Eddy at Big Winds to give you free shipping; he might just do that! You could also ask him to send it and leave it at the carrier's warehouse nearest to your address for you to pick up, as opposed to get it delivered at a residential address (quite a bit more expensive). If you are interested, give Eddy a call. He is a super nice guy and will be glad to help you!

I have my eyes set on this one.
I’m not sure how things work with retailer dropping price? Like, is December when prices drop? Or are prices dropping when a new year model shows up? And when is that?
I was hoping to see its price drop below $1,000 dollars. But right now, this is in first place along with a 112 l jp Australia.

Do you guys know this retailer? Nb windsurfing. They ship for free and have very good prices. Unfortunately, right now, I’m not sure there is a good match

I hate to disappoint you, but the price of used boards doesn’t really fall around holidays. Just be patient, you have at least 4 months until the next season. Keep checking the online retailers, including Craigslist and some good deal may pop up. People will generally wait till April to put their stuff for sale. The Evanston swap is in May also. Don’t rush, but keep looking.

Now I feel like I need to add something to my earlier post. IMO most wave kit is to some extent more difficult to sail, even the hybrid freestyle-wave or freewave, then a purely freeride kit. On top of that with a freeride and even freerace equipment you can learn to do all the basic stuff that a typical everyday Joe and Jane would learn in the course of their entire windsurfing “career “ like all the basic tacks including Heli, all the basic jibes including Duck and all the basic jumps including Forward loop. So the question comes down to: Are you going to do any sort of wave riding at least a few times in a season?
If the answer is more likely not, because for example:
1. Lake Michigan and it’s crappy wave conditions is too far for you.
2. Wave riding in Lake Michigan and it’s crappy wave conditions is extremely difficult and has a high chance of inflicting a significant damage to body and equipment
then you won’t ever need anything with a wave in it’s name.
Now the board list that you first posted looks a lot better to me then my first wave biased impression. Everything except the Shark 120 and Atom 120 that are too big and too close to your current board will work for you and in case you want a more manoeuvre oriented board choose the Allride or the Gecko, or if you want more speed oriented one choose something like the Fire Ride or Goya Bolt. For sails if you like the Goya line then choose the Nexus for manoeuvre or Mark for speed.
Don’t complain now that I didn’t make it a lot more difficult to you
PS: If you choose speed orientation, I’m recommending you my favorite Sailworks Retro and you can find used in good condition here : www.sailworks.com/the-gear/used-gear/used-sails.html
Best masts for the Retro are Joystick and Lightstick for 460 and up and Carbon Twill or Sumo for 430 and down.
Used ones here: www.sailworks.com/the-gear/used-gear/used-masts.html
Take a very close look at the Hucker line also! For me it is a mystery that I never had a chance to try, but it looks like a hybrid line that’s very good for jumping according Sailworks. Probably a very good match to hybrid boards like the Allride and the Starship, but I’m only guessing here.
Also check used Goya inventory, if you haven’t already: goyawindsurfing.com/team-gear/

One of the reasons I sold my RRD Firemove 110 L was once the wind was powered 5.8 Clinton was too rough for it. Something to think about. It was a 7.5 and bigger sail board. It would take a ton of wind to make a Freestyle Wave of the same volume make you want to come ashore.

Keep it simple:

Tail width
Tail width
Tail width

How can you keep it simple nowadays, when freewave boards have wider tails then freemove boards while being very narrow at the widest point at the same time. My head is spinning :pinch: I like the golden middle of tail widths present in the Kode and the new 3S if I go the freewave route and look for as narrow as possible tail if I go the freemove route like the one in the CarveIQ.
I disagree about the Firemove 110 being a 7.5 and above board. In fact I wouldn’t use anything above 8.0 on a 110 freemove and I sailed it with a 5.7 just fine. Im sure I will be able to sail it with the much stable low point Retro 5.5 just fine too. The freemove boards sit low in the water which minimizes lifting control issues. Plug a smaller fin, move the mast foot forward and you can sail in a gale . The only issue is jumping, if you don’t do it right the wind migt catch the deck and nosedive you badly.

I wish we had a big corporation in US with a chain of stores specializing in water sports that could offer a no-interest store credit card . Probably this would have given a boost to the sport. Also if all this “mom and pop” stores that struggle to exist could pull together in some kind of cooperative that can offer this kind of store credit, that may work too. I think I saw financing offers in UK windsurfing stores commercials , why not here?!

Thanks, I have enough of “eyes full, hands empty “, like they say in my native country.
