Tri-fins?!? I'm thinking quads now!!! just jockin of course. I suspect rather sooner then later I'll get to your setup, but for now I'm not ready to give up the 7.5 4 footstraps blasting-maybe another couple of years. Hey I just dropped the 9.0 and the 136L after all . Let's say I'm indulging in some experimenting at this stage-like the 80ish L nonsense.
I was pretty sure why you replaced the Firemove. I was sorry I dint jump on it when you were selling it, I ended up with an AtomIQ 110 for a lot more
Hi Reid. First off, thanks for all the work you've put into this website. I continue to learn a ton from it.
I'm an intermediate sailor who is working my way down in board volume. My most often used board is a 2011 145L RRD Fireride (which I use for 9.5, 8.5, 7, and sometimes 6 sails), but I also have a 2012 108L RRD Freestyle Wave board, which I use for my 5.0 and 6.0 sails. As you may know, the RSS for the 108L FSW is 5.2-7.3. I've used the 108L with my 5.0 and 6.0 sails, but I've never tried it with my 7.0 Ezzy Freeride. When you sail your 6.9 with the 108L, do you use the stock fin (31cm), or do you use a larger fin? I'm wondering if at my size (175 lbs) and ability I need more fin for the 7.0, especially to stay upwind. Thoughts?

I'm wondering if at my size (175 lbs) and ability I need more fin for the 7.0, especially to stay upwind. According to this fin chart, for example, I should be pairing my 7.0 with something like a 43-44 cm fin, which is quite a step up from the 31cm stock fin. Thoughts?
I use a 34 cm MFC K-One FreeRide for 6.9 and 5.8 on the my RRD FSW 108. It's my light wind wave set-up. And on the previous page where I show the 108 / 120 comparison. The RRD FSW 120 (2009) comes with a 34 cm fin.

For more power up wind and skunk busting I have 44 cm MFC RC2. It's very thin and narrow.
MFC RC2
I haven't tried it yet on the 108 and didn't know if the tail was wide enough to give the leverage to hold that puppy down. Brian a few pages back says he uses a 40 cm with a 7.5 on his RRD FSW 111 (2010) and says it works great. So something at or just under 40 cm might be the best bet. It's up wind ability vs. rail to rail ability. The cord(maximum width) of a fin also plays a part. More area in a shorter length.

Draft forward sails like the Freeride force you to apply more back foot pressure which results in spinn outs if the fin is too small and or too soft. I would go at least 36 cm for a 7.0 Freeride. It will improve your early planing aswell. I like the LiquidPro in the 30-40 fin range.

As it turns out, I have a fin that may be just about right... a 38 cm Liquid Pro fin that I use with my 145L board. I'm really interested to try it out now on the 108L.

Spring, where art thou?

Tri-fins?!? I'm thinking quads now!!! just jockin of course.
Fanatic tri-fin circa 1986 being table topped in one of the all time classic windsurf movies 'Hard Winds a Blowin'(1987) from The Gorge.
This is the 3rd go-round I've seen for multi-fins since I started windsurfing in 1985. And this latest one does seem to have the charm. There was a wave of twin fins stating in 1994.
The only multi-fin board I've ever tried was Greg's Gorge Animal Bonzer in Maui back in 1994. Here's a pic of what one of those looks like.
5 fins on the Bonzer

My first shortboard (spring of 1983) was a tri-fin G&S 8'3"
My most recent board purchase (Fanatic Fly 10'6") is also a tri.
In between those it's been nothing but singles
