L
ake Michigan, like many of the Great Lakes, is one of the last frontiers of windsurfing.
To this day there are still unexplored sites or remote sites that have not been witness to their biggest
day.
The sheer volume of water in the waves generated by this lake is impressive. If the sight
of the waves doesn't scare you, the sound creeping up from behind might. After you've been pummeled
by one of these waves, nobody will have to explain to you what 62 pounds a cubic foot means. If at
first you don't grab the concept, don't worry because every 6 seconds you'll get a reminder.
The shock and
awe days that the lake provides are balanced by the highest number of skunkings you'll ever experience. Everybody
has his or her limit, and Lake Michigan will eventually find yours. Nobody will give you a hard time if
you choose to just "sit in the car." That's always a better position to be in than begging the lake
just to get you back to shore, with or the without your gear.
Lake Michigan, has the biggest fresh water conditions one can windsurf
"entirely within" the United States. It should be on the list of, "places to sail before I die."
