"In total, 77 percent of the Great Lakes remains frozen over, down from 92.19, according to the Great Lakes Environmental research Laboratory. The largest lake, Lake Superior, takes tops the list at almost 90 percent covered.

It's been quite the roller coaster winter for Lake Michigan's ice. The season began in late November, slowly climbing to about 20 percent ice cover toward late December. A near 40 percent cover in January crashed downward by mid-month, only to pick up again.

"The largest jump in ice came just month ago, from about 30 percent in late February to suddenly reach its record high. Only the winter of 2008-09 can come close to this season in recent years, having topped off near 55 percent halfway into the season.

NOAA reports the previous record for ice on Lake Michigan was set in 1977."
